Ah, the memories of childhood – Makaroni Po-Flotski (Macaroni Navy Style, Макароны По-Флотски), simple, but flavorful and satisfying dish that I’m sure many will enjoy.
Most Soviets are familiar with Makaroni Po-Flotski dish.
It’s a Russian dish made of cooked pasta mixed with stuffing made of stewed ground meat (you can use any). I like to add fried onions and mushrooms to it as well for even more flavor.
This dish was originally served in maritime forces, the dish became very popular in Russia because of its simplicity, low cost, and quickness of its preparation.
Navy pasta was on the menu of many kindergartens and schools. So kids love this dish.
Since I was a terrible eater as a child there were only a few things that I liked and Makaroni Po-Flotski was the one I remember.
My Mom used to say that I live on “Air Diet”, lol
She was right!
I hated eating as a child and now look at what happened – I became the Food Blogger! The Irony!
How to make Makaroni Po-Flotski
The Macaroni po-flotski is a perfect dish for new cooks since there are only a few ingredients to use and takes almost no time to prepare.
Usually consists of just 3 ingredients: Ground Meat, Pasta and Caramelized onion.
But since I like to ENHANCE the flavor of my recipes, I’ve added mushrooms, garlic and Pasta sauce.
Cook the pasta according to package directions.
In a skillet, melt the butter and light olive oil, saute onion and garlic until golden brown.
Add mushrooms and cook until browned. Remove to a warm plate.
Add more oil and cook ground meat stirring occasionally for 10 to 15 minutes.
Break large lumps with a spatula.
Add Pasta sauce and mix well.
Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Add the pasta to the meat. Mix and garnish with fresh herbs.
Another alternative is to serve Makaroni Po-Flotski over Grechka (Buckwheat)! The perfect combination as well!
Enjoy your meal!
